Procedures and Fees

At the present time, there is only one active town cemetery in Berkley, The Berkley Common Cemetery, located on North Main Street between the gas station and the middle school. However, there are no new lots available. Interment is allowed in previously purchased lots which have space (as determined by the Cemetery Commission or its designee). In cases where there is disputed ownership of a lot, the Cemetery Commission will make the final determination.

The current fee schedule can be located at the link provided above. Please note, for each interment there is an administrative fee. Checks should be made payable to the Town of Berkley. A second check will be required for the opening of the grave. The commission will let the undertaker know which of our contractors will be doing the opening and the cost of the opening, which ranges from $125.00 for the burial of remains to $600.00 for a vault burial. Between the months of December 1 and March 31, there will be additional charges depending on the work required. In addition, in cases where the grave cannot be opened due to weather or safety issues, the Cemetery Commission reserves the right to notify the undertaker that storage arrangements must be made.

Prior to any stones/monuments being placed in the cemetery, a drawing needs to be submitted by the monument company. The one exception is the placement of a veteran's marker. In this case, the superintendent needs to be contacted so that he can give shipping directions.

Stones and monuments must be placed by a designee of the cemetery commission.
